Ingrown Toenails

A toenail becomes ingrown when the corner or side of the toenail grows into the flesh or nail bed of the toe. Ingrown toenails can cause pain, swelling, redness, and sometimes, infection. If you have diabetes or another condition that causes poor circulation in the feet, an ingrown toenail can cause greater complications.

Ill-fitting shoes, improper nail care, trauma to the nail plate or toe, bacterial infections, and genetic predisposition to ingrown toenails are all causes of this condition. In nearly all cases, drainage of blood or discharge from the toe should mean a trip to the podiatrist, a specialist trained explicitly to treat these conditions.

As a podiatrist, Dr. Ames is professionally trained and fully qualified to treat ingrown toenails and other conditions of the foot. If you are experiencing these symptoms, call our office at (512) 407-8188 to make an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Ames.
